Year 8 students at Maryhill decided to ditch the pens and exercise books before Christmas and instead reach for cameras and mics!

Our very first Media Day saw every Year 8 student use our media equipment to produce their very own TV news report. Their task was work in groups to create a news report on a fictional road accident. The report had to last at least two minutes and include studio link, location report – not to mention using official statistics about national road accidents.

Running over two days, the Year 8s had great fun and all students completed their reports to the deadline.

Feedback from students included:

“I was really scared to go in front of the camera before.”
”I learned loads of new things.”
“Time is precious – you should use your creativity.”

The purpose of the day was to discuss and debate the causes, effects and possible solutions for climate change. Having impressed the judges at Cool Stoke with their excellent media skills, our team were awarded the first prize of two mini-hydrogen powered cars. Our team who consisted of Bethany Bowker Josh Ellis, Matthew Haworth and Jade Leese, produced a newspaper article, poster campaign and radio broadcast that discussed local issues regarding climate change. They were inspired by flooding events that had actually occurred in school earlier this year. Back in July heavy rain and thunder storms hit Kidsgrove causing localised flooding and disrupting roads. The students carried out huge amounts of research into the effects of climate change and discovered how scientists claim that June this year was the wettest month on record in England—all thanks to climate change.Holly Hoar, who judged work at the Cool Stoke Climate Change Conference said how students sealed their first prize by the high quality of their radio report.

DESPITE all the rumours flying around, The Termly Tongue can EXCLUSIVELY reveal that Maryhill High IS NOT closing down.Whispers began in September when news came of the plans to demolish houses on the Galleys Bank Estate – an area only minutes away from Maryhill. It was thought at first that Maryhill would be knocked down too, and there was even talk of Maryhill merging with Clough Hall to make an academy.

But following a meeting with Kidsgrove Councillor Margaret Astle, she explained how Maryhill will be not affected if the plans go ahead.Margaret Astle has been campaigning to stop Newcastle Borough Council and a company called Renew from knocking down the houses on the Galleys Bank – or Miners Estate since she became aware of it last year. The two companies were having meetings about regenerating Kidsgrove and discussed six possible options of what could happen to the town. It was during these meetings that it was considered to knock down houses on the Miners Estate and eventually build new ones.

As well as this, there are also plans to rebuild Kidsgrove town centre. Possible changes would see Bee Jays being knocked down as well Barclay’s bank and the Post Office being demolished. But Margaret Astle was keen to point out to the Termly Tongue that these are only plans and lots more discussion must go ahead before any decisions are made.

Everyone in Maryhill is concerned about what may possibly happen with the Miners Estate, particularly because some many of our students live in this area. But with regard to Maryhill, it comes as a relief to know from Margaret Astle that under these plans nothing will happen to Maryhill. She said: “Maryhill High and Clough Hall have not been mentioned in any of the meetings between Newcastle Borough Council and Renew.”
